Children Portraiture

There is no denying, children are the cutest and most fascinating people on this planet. They represent innocence, curiosity, wonder, attitude, dependence, growth and change, and they are so multi-faceted quite often they are misunderstood. The photographs of our children are the ones we cherish most, as they capture moments in time that will not last, and pass by in fleeting moments we wish we could relive forever.

All too soon they are off to their first day at school, with new uniforms and excited smiles we know will both fade over the years to come. Before you know it, they’re borrowing the keys to your car so they don’t have to walk to the corner store. It is my opinion that children are the best subjects for photography, as they can’t help but be themselves. I photograph kids of any age, from infancy to adolescence. I capture the moments when they let down their guard and show who they are as a person, which is often a glimpse of who they will be as an adult.

I try to catch them in a natural state, where they feel comfortable and at ease, rather than put them in a basket and say “Goo goo gah gah”. These are the pictures that parents like to see, as it represents their child as a subject, not an object. And when the child grows up, they’ll take pride in seeing their own pictures, saying “Wasn’t I a curious little critter,” or “Some habits never die,” rather than “Why the hell am I in that basket?”

Being one of six children, with ages spanning over twenty years, I know how to relate to kids of all ages. And those who know me will vouch, I am still a child at heart. I also hold a positive notice Blue Card, as issued by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian, deeming me safe and suitable to work with children.

Although every child is different, and therefore requires different approaches, a typical shoot will involve the following:
The child, parents/family members and myself will go to a park, playground, or event where the child will have fun. The shoot will take anywhere from 1-4 hours, and will involve playing on a playground, eating lunch, spending time with parents etc. Afterwards we all get an ice cream or fruit juice, depending on the parents’ preference, and head home. For the child it is a fun day out, rather than a laborious photo shoot. And for you, the parents, it is a safe and effective way to capture beautiful moments of your child having fun and being themself.

I am always friendly, and am open to any suggestions you may have for your child’s portraiture. I am certain I will capture beautiful pictures that you will look upon with great love and fond memories, for decades to come.
